WHY CLASSICAL AND CHRISTIAN GO TOGETHER

You are probably here because you want to give your children the best in Christian education. You might also be asking, “Why classical?” Asking good questions is a very classical thing to do, and the most classical thing you could do now is follow where your question leads.

Our cultural lineage traces from the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), the intellectual riches of the Greeks, and the treasures of Gospel. The reasons for classical Christian education are many, but here we will consider just one reason. The Greeks handed down to us an education designed for the pursuit of Truth. The Christian faith gives us the person who is Truth (Jn. 14:6). Christianity gives us Christ at the center so we know what (or who) to teach. Classical education shows us how.

The ancient Greeks, those ageless inventors of the classical tradition, would invite you to dig deeper into your question. Socrates would tell you, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Plato would encourage your thinking as “the talking of the soul with itself.” Aristotle would answer, “All men by nature desire to know.” This classical trio would cheer you on in your search of classical learning. Then the Apostle Paul would join in with a tremendous crescendo pointing you to “Christ the power and wisdom of God” (I Cor. 1:24). Together, the classical and Christian approaches to education show us how to teach students as whole people in need of the whole Truth.
